Paddy Power Activation – The Cheltenham Festival

On Tuesday 12th March, the opening day of the infamous Cheltenham Festival horse racing, we teamed up with Oranges and Lemons to deliver a town centre activation for betting company Paddy Power.

They wanted race-goers to ‘start the week ยฃ7.50 up’ by giving away a free pint of Guinness per person which is what a pint can set you back at the Racecourse. Given our longstanding relationship with The Brewery Quarter, they were thrilled to be able to host this event alongside their live music programme. It helped to put the entertainment complex onto the map for visitors to Cheltenham and encourage greater footfall into the bars and restaurants within The Brewery Quarter.

In the end, we had one week from confirmation to the delivery date to execute this event. This was a quick turnaround project that meant all hands on deck, but we pulled it off with the help of one of our fabulous freelancers. The build took place overnight in pretty terrible weather conditions. Of course, this meant some obstacles had to be overcome, not only with the weather but also building in the dark!

Despite the weather, the set up ran to schedule and hundreds of racers turned up to enjoy the perks that Paddy Power had to offer.

The bar staff and brand ambassadors were kitted out with Paddy Power branded jackets, greeting guests with a friendly face and encouraging people into the astroturfed bar area (not that they needed much encouraging!). Further items and branding that we co-ordinated was a spray paint stencil for the astroturf of the Paddy Power logo, stylish seating, picket fence, and of course the clearspan marquee that protected everyone from the rain.

The feedback in-person and online was fantastic and really positive, with a clear desire for this activation to be a regular feature in Cheltenham at the races. It seems as though many with tickets to the following days of the Festival felt as though they had missed out. We hope that Paddy Power can return next year, and for longer than a day to get race-goers’ days off to a great start!

โ›ธ๏ธ Cheltenham Ice Rink - Sustainability Report 2023 โ›ธ๏ธ

At the beginning of the year, the Ice Rink in Cheltenham finished another successful season of skating sessions, this year with an improved focus on sustainability ๐ŸŒ

We worked with @visitcheltenham and the suppliers of the Ice Rink to collate all production, transport, waste, serveware, graphics information and inputted this into TRACE. TRACE provides a sleek software to understand exactly which areas of the event are the highest contributors to the carbon output, which we were then able to format into a visual presentation. This will allow for the organising team and suppliers to work on improving for next time and reducing the event`s carbon impact event further.

๐ŸŽช 5% VAT for Festivals ๐ŸŽช

@aif_uk are asking the UK Government to lower VAT on music festival ticket sales from 20% to 5% for a temporary period of three years.

As of last week, 21 UK festivals have announced having to postpone, cancel, or completely close this year. AIF are predicting that the UK may lose over 100 festivals in 2024 due to rising costs.

We have witnessed the damage that the pandemic, increasing supply chain costs, Brexit, and the energy crisis have caused to the once thriving UK festival scene. In order to keep our most-loved events alive, the government must take action now!
